THE OPPORTUNITY
CENTER
|
|
The Opportunity Center is a unique prevention program that builds
bridges to children’s success through an innovative combination of
professional and community resources for at-risk youth and their
families, including a powerful team of:
• volunteer mentors
• parents
• therapists
• businesses
• team coordinators
• case managers
Two hours a week can brighten a future!
Each child is matched with a mentor, based on common interests — such as
music, writing or sports — and the strengths of the child. With the
support and guidance of the mentor, the child not only experiences a
consistent, positive relationship, but has the unique opportunity to
practice his counseling goals in the
community; this often leads to more successful behaviors for the child.
The mentor, who agrees to meet with the child a minimum of two hours a
week for one year, is an integral part of the team and works with them
to help further the child’s goals. The team coordinator oversees the
child, family, mentor and staff to ensure that everyone is working well
together.

The Process...
Who
Are Our Mentors?
Our mentors include students, retired persons and other individuals from
our community who are at least 18 years of age. Mentors are role
models for youth; they are ready and willing to inspire and support
youth through positive,
constructive, educational and fun activities. Mentors are partners in
hope.
What is the
Screening Process?
In order to ensure the appropriateness of the placement, staff will
screen all applicants. The screening process includes an interview,
personal references, and checks of driving and criminal records.
Are there Training
Sessions?
Prior to placement, mentors participate in a training program that
addresses issues associated with services to at-risk youth, including
child development issues, developing trust, conflict resolution skills,
communication skills, techniques that enhance self-esteem, and team
building strategies.
What Support is Given?
Staff
will monitor the placement including periodic consultation with mentors,
families and therapists.

Counseling...
Emotional and behavioral issues are addressed by individual or family
counseling. Private sessions give children and teens a safe place
to talk about their life experiences without judgment. Family counseling
fosters growth and better relationships with those who are central to
the child’s life.
Enrichment Activities...
Enrichment Activities such as a baseball game, a children’s theater
performance, or going to a park also provide opportunities for children
to practice behaviors and lessons learned in therapy. In addition
to having fun with staff, mentors and other children, enrichment
activities help children learn cooperation, build trust and develop
conflict resolution skills. These experiences also enhance the
counseling process for each child.
Opportunities...
The Guidance Center offers opportunities for children and teens through
Mentoring, Case Management, Therapy and Enrichment Activities.
Many young people are looking for someone to spend a few hours a week
with them to be a positive influence and give them hope for the future.
